Assistant Director

The Career Center at GVSU, invites applications for an Assistant Director position. This .8 FTE position that will work full time during the academic year and one day per week for 6 pay periods during the Spring/Summer. Spring/Summer for 2018 will be from May 6, 2018 - August 5, 2018, dates to change each year. 

Required Qualifications and Education:

  • Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and collaborate on cross-functional teams
  • Strong interpersonal, advising and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated experience in employment industry collaboration and event planning
  • Understanding of career decision making and development
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations

Preferred Qualifications and Education:

  • Demonstrated understanding/experiences in the career development process specific to public and social services fields, and graduate students
  • Demonstrated ability to create and deliver effective presentations
  • Demonstrated experience using Adobe Creative Suites
  • Demonstrated understanding of content management systems and website design and maintenance

Responsibilities – Essential Functions: 

  • Counsel and advise current/prospective liberal arts, business, public service and social science students and alumni, regarding short and long-term career planning; internship procedures; interview techniques; resume/cover letter development; and conducting job searches
  • Conduct group presentations for current and prospective students and alumni regarding Career Center procedures and employability issues
  • Assist with preparation of career fairs, employer panels and employment workshops / events for students and alumni
  • Make employer visitations to facilitate linkages between employers and students / alumni, promote internships, obtain feedback regarding students, and promote GVSU and its students and graduates
  • Facilitate introductions and meetings between alumni/company recruiting representative and Deans and Directors
  • Interface with faculty and staff to aid in the development of sound, practical internship and career guidance activities

Responsibilities – Non-essential Functions

  • Create and implement marketing efforts to students, employers and faculty with a goal of increasing awareness and participation in office events, internship experiences, and full-time employment opportunities
  • Work with recent alumni in a wide range of fields to develop new employment opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students
  • Research hiring trends to identify employment opportunities within new companies, industries and geographic areas
  • Identify alumni within target companies to assist with recruiting efforts
  • Coordinate alumni volunteers for a wide array of programs and events
  • Supervise or share in supervision of CSAL graduate assistants
  • Attend events planned by student organizations
